Meet the Maker
Hey there! I’m Mindy, the creative force behind Milkweed Baby—a one-woman, needle-and-thread-wielding powerhouse crafting embroidered hats, patches, and handmade accessories from my Prairie Village, Kansas studio.
My journey into handmade goods wasn’t exactly planned—it was more of a happy accident. I’ve always been a maker, never without a creative project in the works. But when I started dating my husband (a natural sales guy), he saw something more—something worth sharing with the world. With his encouragement, I turned my lifelong passion into a business.
I grew up surrounded by talented women who could sew, crochet, and create just about anything. My honorary grandmother introduced me to embroidery when I was barely old enough to hold a needle, and while I dabbled over the years, I never fully committed to it. That all changed at the end of 2023 when I lucked into an embroidery machine another maker was selling. I dove in headfirst, teaching myself the craft and bringing my artistic vision to life in stitches.
Handmade with Heart & A Little Bit of Sass
Every piece I create is made with high-quality materials, meticulous attention to detail, and a whole lot of personality. I’m a perfectionist—if it’s not top-notch, it doesn’t leave my studio. Whether I’m embroidering by hand, using my machine, heat-pressing patches onto hats, or sketching new designs, my creative touch is in every step of the process.
I believe that when handmade is done right, nothing compares. Mass-produced goods lack the soul, care, and inspiration that make handmade pieces special. My work is about bringing that magic back—creating accessories that are bold, colorful, and impossible to ignore.
Who’s It For?
Honestly? I create for myself. The joy in this work comes from making things that speak to me. But the best part? When my work resonates with you. Whether you’re a trendsetter, a gift-giver, or someone who loves supporting small, women-owned businesses, this is a space for you.
My daughter has recently taken an interest in my work, and nothing brings me more joy than sharing this craft with her—watching her explore sewing, embroidery, and even business ideas of her own. She’s got fresh ideas, a creative eye, and the best enthusiasm (plus, she’s way better at organizing than I am).
Everyone’s Welcome—But Hatred Isn’t
At the heart of my brand is inclusivity. All people are welcome here—this is a safe space where creativity and community thrive. I actively support small, women-owned businesses and choose American-made materials whenever possible.
If you love handmade goods with heart, vibrant designs, and a bit of attitude, you’re in the right place. Thanks for being here—I can’t wait for you to rock a piece of my work.
